Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho could sign two new players in January.
The Red Devils have secured back-to-back wins to drag themselves back into the race for Champions League qualification.
They sit six points behind rivals City ahead of this weekend’s action and Mourinho is now looking ahead to the opening of the window next month.
It was suggested United would sign two new defenders in January but the form of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo may lead to a change in plan, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Despite the pair’s resurgence, United scouted Benfica defender Victor Lindelof at the weekend and Southampton captain Jose Fonte is available for £15million. Eric Bailly could also miss up to nine games due to his Africa Cup of Nations commitments.

United showed interest in Fonte during the summer window and the Portugal international shares the same agent as Mourinho in Jorge Mendes.
Mourinho is understood to have discussed his transfer plans when Mendes recently visited him at The Lowry Hotel.
Morgan Schneiderlin is expected to join Everton in a permanent deal 18 months after joining United and Mourinho also expects Memphis Depay to leave, whether it be on loan or permanently – with Everton confirmed admirers of the Dutchman.

Ashley Young is also interesting Everton, as well as former club Watford, West Brom and Swansea. It is understood Mourinho has informed Young he wants to keep him beyond the winter window.
Mourinho is also believed to be keen on retaining Matteo Darmian following his recent resurgence. The Italian has started the last six Premier League games and had the privilege of being one of the rested first-teamers for last week’s tie against Zorya.
The Italian had appeared just twice before Antonio Valencia fractured his arm in late October and was heavily linked with Internazionale before Frank de Boer was sacked.

United are still open to offers for Bastian Schweinsteiger despite his return to the first-team fold. The 32-year-old German has made one appearance all season.
Schweinsteiger was spotted with Chicago coach Veljko Paunovic leaving chic Hale restaurant Piccolino during the November international fortnight and has expressed an interest in moving to the United States.
Should Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin depart, Mourinho could reinforce United’s midfield. He has privately praised Leicester midfielder and United academy graduate Danny Drinkwater.
Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone said after he signed his new contract in October he was keen on a loan move in January, however Mourinho might prevent United’s third-choice goalkeeper from departing until the summer.
